HORSE | SHORE is a series of forty oil paintings and a forthcoming book project pairing statuettes of horses from across cultures and centuries with water-themed figures and objects drawn from open-access image archives. The connection begins with wordplay: horse and shore are anagrams.
From the same five letters come a familiar animal and a land-water boundary. Then there is the seahorse. It sounds like a horse and looks something like a horse, but isn't a kind of horse at all. Shore expands just as freely, gathering boats, vessels, figures, and other things associated with water.
The project moves between received categories and invented sets, using selection and association to reorganize images already named and classified by their archives. Through interpretation, repetition, and re-pairing, the paintings bring these images into new relations, giving form to an unlikely question: What is the horse to the shore? What is the shore to the horse?
